I was thinking of taking a short break in Iceland and coughing up $999 to FI for the promotional business class fare.
Iceland is a beautiful country, once you get away from the KEF-REK area, which makes new visitors think they have landed on the moon. So if you plan a TA trip with an Iceland stopover, or just a visit to Iceland, you will have a nice time.
I really don't think the extra $999 for the upgrade is worth it. I was flying on FI every month in 2000-2001, as we had an account in Reykjavik. Flying on a full Y fare, I was upgraded to business class almost every time. It was a bigger seat, a nicer meal, back then you were issued a personal DVD plaver with current selections. It was nicer than the back, of course, but for a 5-6 hr flight, what you get with Icelandair's BC is not worth the additional cost.
Now, if the cost is not out of your pocket, that is one thing. I was upgraded because I was on a full Y fare, but if I was paying the cost, I would not pay for the upgrade. Stick it out in the back, and then be happy with the money you have saved.
The bottom line for me is how I feel when I walk off the plane. If I pay for an upgrade, was it worth it? No offense to FI, but a grand for the upgrade is too much. But if you go with the upgrade, do visit the Icelandair Club in Kef, which has to have the best snacks I have ever run across in the airline clubs.
Actually, I plan another trip to KEF this fall. I'll be in the back, but I wonder if FI allows a 1 day purchase of membership to their FF club,as most FF clubs do. It would be worth about $50 or so. Does anyone know if Icelandair offers a daily membership?
