STELLENBOSCH is actually a large town (has one of the biggest universities in South Africa), while a lot of wineries are around there and the bigger "corporate" types have their offices there, it isn't necessarily the center. Technically the whole garden route is the "main area" as the wineries were the original reason it was started (although Stellenbosch is an interesting town and of course worth a visit)
