I agree with the above poster that said with proper precautions, it'll be enjoyable. As scary as it sounds, most carjackings happen in people's driveways as opposed to parking lots or intersections. Also, like virtually all societies, crime disporportionally affects the poor, so remember that Soweto and the surrounding townships are considerably more dangerous than JNB proper, but if you do choose to see a township, most have local tourguides who can show you around so if you want to see Mandela's house or the Hector (forgot his last name, but his murder was a cataclyst for rioting in the 70s) monument, plus visit some other local sights/shops there, local tourguides can take you there, plus, any hotel can arrainge that.
Most go to SA w/o trouble, again, just use common sense and you'll be fine.
