I called the AAdvantage service centre and they credited them back - in full -

maybe because they'd expired only a month or two before, I really don't know, it was 11,000 miles. Had them convert them to a HHonors voucher for a free stay ^ as I had/have no plans to fly AA aagain. Excellent customer service.
