I think this is called "nested" ticketing and is "illegal" as you are circumventing the saturday night stay requirements.

I believe the rules require you to fly all itineraries in order.

ALTHOUGH, if itinerary 2 wasn't back to EWR, I don't see how that could be a problem.

So, I could be wrong above.
