My understanding is that these masks are virtually useless and can not provide life sustainable oxygenation in true emergencies in a depressurizing craft.

Have you seen the oxygen gear airforce pilots wear? Now that is the real deal and not the mickey-mouse yellow masks commercial aircraft provide to give us the illusion we are being cared for.
