I believe a Y pass upgrade comes out of the Z inventory.
An allpass upgrade comes out of "R" inventory (which you can't see on ITN).
My upgraded ticket was ticketed in R class last year (EWR-HNL) (after much trouble getting it processed).

I believe this is correct, although you do occasionally get an agent who will force the upgrade into Z...
I think this is the right breakdown; please correct me if I'm wrong. We've had a few questions on this recently...
Fare Codes (on a BF flight):
J = Paid BusinessFirst
D = BF in a combined Int'l/Domestic Itin???
Z = BF Upgradeable seat from Full Y Fare, also sold as consolidator discounted BF fares
E = BF Seat avail purely with miles (can occasionally be seen on ITN)
R = BF Upgradeable seat from discounted coach (AllPass), invisible on ITN.
Y = Full Coach Fare, when u purchase at this fare, you can upgrade on Y-Pass to Z class if avail (current Y8 fare EWR-HNL $2400 R/T)
H and K = Slightly discounted coach fares, upgradeable with AllPass to R class if avail
B and V = Lower, discounted coach class, upgradeable to R class if avail with Allpass PLUS $300 each way.
Q and T = Lowest, discounted coach fares, upgradeable to R class if avail with Allpass PLUS $400 each way.
?? = Coach seat available purely with miles (cannot be see on ITN)
YPass Upgrade to HNL = 7500 miles one-way
AllPass Upgrade to HNL = 17,500 miles one-way
Does this look right?
