I'm based out of RDU and the staff at the check-in counters are usually atrocious; they seemed to be better when UA flew out of terminal A. I never use them unless checking luggage on an international trip, which I rarely do. The gate agents are typically better.
Use the check-in kiosks just inside the terminal doors next to curb-side check-in instead of those at the check-in counters. They are always open.
A lot of inexperienced fliers seem to use RDU. Security can be an ordeal sometimes since a lot of people seemed confused/dazed. I always arrive early.
