usually true for small hotels which does not have key card locks. it is much more expensive to change the lock if key is lost compared to change the code and issue another plastic card, therefore hotels which have key locks do everything possible in order you will leave key at the reception (like attaching cork screw or huge plastic tag with the room number to the key so it won't fit into the pocket )
