It remains to be seen how well TED does vis-a-vis United Shuttle, when it comes to fighting off the LCCs. Shuttle had F, but no E+. TED has no F, but does have E+ (and video entertainment to help pass the time).
AA's strength is the larger domestic premium cabins. You have a better chance of getting up front, but if you don't, the demise of MRTC means you'll be wedged into Economy.
UA has smaller premium cabins, but at least you have Economy Plus. When it comes to international travel, this is even more important since it allows you to "survive" such a trip if you are unable to get into Business Class.
p.s. is a solid idea to not only retain existing business on a high-revenue route, but to try and win back revenue lost to other carriers (like AA and CO) as well as steal new revenue from them.
It might work if expanded, especially if UA is aggressive with A and Z fares...
