I had booked award travel DTW-BKK. I was scheduled DTW-IND-LAX-ICN-BKK, with the last two segments on Korean Air. I got a call from a real live person today because Korean Air had changed their schedule, so I would now have a 14 hour layover in LAX and a 15 hour layover in ICN. To make a long story short, NW put me on DTW-NRT-BKK, even though there wasn't technically award availability on that flight. The agent was very polite and helpful, and I really appreciate not having 30 hours of layover! I know that the change wasn't even NW's fault, and I was very appreciative that they were willing to back up their partner airlines.

There are still employees at NW who are customer-focused, and I'll stick with that, even if I don't get spinzels.
I agree. Not all of the staff seem like they couldn't care less what you think or want. Some of the nice ones will help you out or try to get you compensation.

Airlines are getting bad names, because of the occasional irked steward or grumpy check-in agent.
