Wine allowed in checked luggage?

My family and I will be flying back to SFO from LHR in Upperclass, with a few bottles of wine that we picked up in France. Does Virgin allow alcohol in checked luggage?

Searching for "wine luggage" only returned one irrelevant hit, and calling Virgin resulted in a recommendation that perhaps we should just hand carry it, and no formal policy is referenced. The FAQ on Virgin's site also yield nothing specific.

I would much rather checked the wine with the luggage if at all possible, and certainly do not look forward to be told at check-in that we have to unpack and hand carry the wine. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge in this matter?
