As others have said, TN treats you like visiting royalty, including courtesy lounge access, etc. etc. (We used AA mile son an award trip to PPT last December.)
I'll also second that if you merely do a connect on to SYD, some scheduling has you there on a two hour layover - not long at all, and it is around the midnight hour.
But if you do have a longer layover, it would depend on what time of day: you could taxi over tot he Beachcomber and have a mucnh and a drink, but be prepared for high prices. Or for a mini-adventure if it is afternoon and you have a nmight flight, take a taxi to the minucipal wharf and have dinner under the stars! "Les Roulottes" are vans and trucks that gather here about 6:00 PM - about 30 or 40 of them - and unfold to set up outdoor restaurants of all kinds. You can dine at one Roulotte, or vary your courses and wander - a little curry here, some seafood there, how about some pizza? Reasonable prices, safe and delicious food, lots of variety, plenty of friendly locals. Taxi back to the airport and you are on your way.
Want to spend some time in Tahiti? Well, technically, the island Papeete is on is the Island of Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Commercialized, expensive and not brilliant for getting an idea of what French Polynesia is all about - but Moorea (which gets very crowded with Tahitians on weekends) is tranquil scenically stunning, and reached by the shortest flight in the world schedule (but Draconian luggage restrictions! leave big bags at Left Luggage at PPT airport, take a handcarry.) Or, taxi to the wharf, take one of the clean, efficient high speed ferries and you are there n half an hour - where al the car rental places are, too, like Europcar.
(My recommendations? Forget the honeymoon, get MARRIED in Moorea or Bora Bora. Or do a local ceremony to cement the marriage...
