I was flying LHR-IAD last summer in WT+ and at that time I was AA Plat (OW Saphire). At the Terrace, I asked politely if I could help out if the flight was oversold. The agent asked if I was asking for u*****e, and I said sure if it will help out (I was also ready to take a bump too).
It worked.
I think the key is not to demand or ask bluntly, but as part of how a pax can help the airline.
Nowday, I'm down to AA Gold, which translate to OW Ruby (worthless to BA), so I doubt that will happen again.
