The Le Meridien is a very good choice. Fairly new, great design, bright and airy rooms, lots of tech-gadgets (at least by european standards), good location within walking distance to all sights. Go for it!

BTW, if you like a more sleek and designer-style hotel, the newly opened Style Hotel Vienna (http://www.stylehotel.at) would also be a - defnitely the BEST location in Vienna for sightseeing (as it is not on Ringstrasse, like most other hotel of that category, but in the middle of the old town of Vienna). In case you need more info, about hotels, restaurants, where to go in December, etc, don't hesitate to PM me.

PS: I really like your comment on "Tyrolean or Bavarian stuff " - here in Austria hotels tend to sell oldfashioned, outdated rooms in desperate need of refurbishment as "traditional Austrian alpine design".... shame on them.
