But..... if you don't sign up for one of the data plans (which includes ISP) you're stuck paying minutes, not to mention that you'll be on a modem (voice) connection and not on a data (probably GPRS) connection.

By the way..... I use this setup all the time. I'm on Cingular, and I did it via a dongle and my phone till I put a bluetooth card in my laptop. I'm limited to 115.2kbps (or slower depending on signal strength), but it works when I can't get a wifi connection.
