Agreed. Kudos to Iran for acting appropriately and not allowing politics to turn the diversion into something more unfortunate.

Historically, one could argue that they could have legitimately shot down the NW plane (using our own President's logic of shoot first and sort it out later).
No, one could not. There is no "legimate" justification for intentionally downing a diverting civilian airliner. And I daresay if Iran had shot down this distressed flight that it would have been a casus belli.
