Here is a handy pamphlet to print from the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions:

Credit Card Signature- All the ID that is needed
I used to carry copies of it to take with me, but most retail clerks have no idea of what is going on. I have a merchant account and have read our merchant agreement and I get annoyed at people who have no common sense. As long as the signature on the slip matches the card and they have an approval code, then the merchant gets paid.
Most of the time the clerk asks for id and then doesn't even compare the signature. Now when I am asked for id. I shoe them the id that they don't read and sign either Not My Signature or Ura Moron on the slip. None have caught that, so I am tempted to do a chargeback and see what happens when they produce a signature, but that would be fraudulent so I won't. I have also begun just paying cash to avoid the hassle.
