Many airlines will say "tough luck". They'll let you standby for the same day only. I know from experience that Delta used to allow this, but now specifically forbids it.

A better way is to use a frequent flyer award if the fare is $1,700. Of course, some airlines charge more miles if you don't stay a Saturday night. Delta doesn't (DL-try to change this and it will be the last straw)
