This situation, (long lines of non-MP members) is an excellent opportunity for some one to work the line signing up people using a hand held device (like the Hertz devices), getting them into the loyalty program and checking them in at the same time.
They do those Mileage Plus announcements at the beginning of the flight.. people have the whole flight to fill out a form and give it to the FA.
I would think that if there was spare person, they should be helping the check-in process and not prolonging it with extra MP questions.
