It is a shame- I far prefer the 744 too.
But looking on the bright side, there are only 2 out of the 7 JFK services on the dreaded 777. YMMV. But annoyingly, they operate the later departures from JFK, which I prefer.

Interestingly, over on the UA board they recently had pictures of some of their redundant 747s parked in the desert in California. Couldn't BA help out a struggling airline and take some of those of their hands?
