The consensus seems to be that BA needs its 744s for the increased longhaul services to the Far East, and US East Coast services are the easiest places to pull them from it appears. PHL has lost its daily 744, JFK has reduced by one, ORD only gets one during the summer etc etc.
It is a shame- I far prefer the 744 too.
