Split is beautiful. Old and historic - Diocletian's Palace is fascinating. I stayed at the Park Hotel, which was nice.

Lots and lots of small villages nearby along the coast with oceanside hotels & villas. Sibenik was very nice, with a picturesque harbor, lots of sidewalk cafes, good people watching.

Good food, particularly seafood.

Inland, I felt Zagreb was a very beautiful city. Stayed at the Hotel Dubrovnic, which proved to be a wonderful location near city center. Great for walking, people watching. Not shopping though - high prices.
