I had an odd lounge experience in Mexico City. IB gives lounge passes to the Frequencia Lounge (on 3rd floor), not the AA lounge (on 2nd floor). Same with LAN. I did go look around the AA lounge, but thought that the Frequencia lounge was much nicer. The AA lounge had a sign at the bar that said in effect that gratuities were not included with drink coupons.
Doesn't seem strange to me, just terribly unprofessional. Presumably, most of the IB pax in MEX will either be Mexican or Spanish, neither of which have a culture of tipping. Many or most of the AA pax will be from the US where tipping is very common. I am certainly not going to get into the merits of a tip based society since it tends to bring the passion out of people, but, imo, it is very inappropriate and unprofessional to have a sign like that whether you believe in tipping or not.
