My wife is a transcon away (EWR SFO), and I do all the flying. When we're together I do all the driving. For a family trip this summer we're starting with a red-eye SFO to CLE ($$ and schedule, but yes I'm a $4K plat) and its understood I sit in first if anyone does, so I'm rested for the AM drive out of BUF. This is safety not a perk, they can be zombies in the car.
Still, I'm tempted to use miles for upgrades for her and her daughter, it is fun the first time. If there ever was a flight where a non-elite companion upgrade might come through, this would be it, but I don't want to chance it. However, she likes the idea of: I try upgrade, spend miles on daughter, see if she companions. Juggle available seats up front with priority me, daughter, her. And this is her idea!
