I rip papers in half -- one rip -- to indicate to myself that they are trash. I do take my trash with me when leaving the aircraft, and the tear makes it easier to distinguish what gets discarded and what gets kept.

I also rip articles out of magazines from time to time. This is fairly common behavior.
