In Ireland or the UK it depends on my mood or whether the cabbie has cleared the front seat but usually I sit in the front.

In Brasil I tend to sit in the front, sometimes to chat but mainly because there is a seat belt. IME many Rio cabs have the seatbelts removed from the back seats and seatbelts are useful things to have on in the streets of Rio.
