Unless I've totally missed something, why didn't you give her the award ticket and you book the paid coach seat. Seems like this would have not only solved your issue, but you would have gotten status miles, mileage bonus, and I think, higher priority for the VIP upgrade.
Of course, I'm sitting here with the benefit of perfect hindsight
