EWR-COflyer, all search engines look for connections between A and B based solely on the flights that do exist between A and X and betwen X and B. X can be anything in the whole world. The shorter travel times are usually displayed first, so you see DFW-IAH-AUS before you see DFW-EWR-AUS.

I suspect search engines don't look up valid routings until you ask for a fare in order to save time. Besides, it really is true that CO flies EWR-MEX-IAH-COS. You were asking for a schedule, not a low fare.
