European Taxi Etiquette

I always assumed that if two people were traveling together in a taxi, they should both sit in the rear seat. Ten years ago, I was in Germany with a friend of mine and he always insisted on sitting up front with the driver, so I thought perhaps this is a custom that he was aware of because he had spent time in the military there. Currently, I travel frequently to Prague and I have a Czech friend living there who always sits up front with the driver while I sit alone in the back seat. Again, I wonder if this is a custom that is simply not observed in the U.S.? I have an upcoming trip to Barcelona and I would like to know if anyone can tell me what the correct practice is there? I feel that both of us should sit in the back seat, but if this is considered to be a form of snobbery I don't want to be thought of in that way. I also wonder what is the correct thing to do when traveling alone (especially a male). Do you sit up front with the driver or alone in the back seat? Any FTers care to advise me on this?
