Of course the hardest challenge is finding a flight with XC availability somewhere you want to go....
I just booked a trip to Japan. XY is available on many flights in Sept, but not XC. So I did the mid-week XY booking with XC waitlist. It will probably work, but not a "customer-satisfying" way of doing awards.
I'm also finding that United is having trouble figuring out how to ticket this. Everytime I call, they say the mileage plus desk hasn't entered the coupon number into the record and then they extend the deadline to get it ticketed. No big deal as the reservation is in Sept (and who knows, XC might show up on another flight or something). But they have now extended the ticketing deadline by 17 days. I've never experienced this before. Big waste of everyone's time just to get the ticket issued.
