First, thanks to all who replied. We ended up taking the train from Waterloo and it was no problem. Trains seemed to run about every half hour or so. Going to Southampton, we had a local, and on the way back, we had an express. About 1h45 to get there, just under 1h30 coming back. I would definitely recommend it.

For those lucky enough to fly Virgin, the flight is remarkable, even without the limo service. This company puts American carriers to shame. The lounges themselves, particularly JFK, are worth the price of admission.
