I can heartily recommend the Fort Garry - most comfortable hotel bed EVER in my opinion and it's great to stay in these older places with some character rather than an out-of-the-box Sheraton or Hilton. Also, a fantastic breakfast and a very nice lounge bar next to the reception.

Another good place for a drink is the revolving restaurant above an apartment complex behind the Fort Garry - gives a good overview of the city and what's beyond it too.

As you'll see from a map, the Fort Garry is convenient for the Forks but was a bit of a cold walk up to the other shopping areas (admittedly, this was in November...)
