I got harrassed at lax AFTER me, my briefcase, and my rollaboard went through xray. CO employee wouldn't allow me to enter the concourse unless I checked my rollaboard (size compliant).

Was told by counter agent that this was basically a direct result of the "shoe bomber".

I flew several more segments on that particular trip, and was not stopped at any other airport.

The carryon rule, at least, seems selectively enforced, in my recent experience. This was the first time I checked luggage in at least 2 years so I can't comment on the checked-luggage part of your question. I don't have enough experience there.
