That's both good news and bad news. The bad news is that you must use miles to get your upgrade (and most of the time, purchase a higher fare to be eligble to upgrade). The good news is that you get service comparable to international premium service on this route, whereas every other carrier operating LAX-HNL provides domestic first class service, or even special "Hawaii configuration" aircraft and service which can be at or below regular domestic first class.
