How about complaining, demanding an apology etc., without mentioning the issue of compensation - would make you not seem like an opportunist-& be able to keep the moral high ground 100%, and that it was so serious an issue that the idea of free miles hadn't even been contemplated. See what their reply is - would be curious to see if they offered comp. if you didnt ask for it.
