I checked into the Eugene OR Hilton last week. I booked a King room, and had a copy of the reservation with me. When I got to my room I found it was two double beds on the Executive Level floor. I really do not like a room with two beds - it makes the room cramped and often the desk is smaller to accommodate the extra bed.

So I went back to the front desk. Unfortunately, the HHonors lady was busy and someone else called me over to assist me. Nicely, I explained that I had booked a king room and was given two doubles - but, that I appreciated the Executive Level room. She went right into her "front desk 101" speech about how my reservation is just a request and the hotel can give me any room they want. Moreover, she tells me they have no kings rooms left.

This is the standard front desk talk they give everyone in this case. To make a long story short, after some advanced techniques I ended up in a suite. Mind you, this took a little work - and no rude or loud talking occurred.

Is there some written rule about the room type you reserve?

Just grabbed my HGI YYC rsvn and it says:

'Your room type preferences have been submitted with your reservation and are subject to hotel availability.'

and also elsewhere in the reservation king, smoking, etc are called 'preferences' only. Did it say something like this on your booking?

I know over on Marriott it's a little different and actually states on the printed confirmation that a king room is guaranteed.
