They need a lot more training on reading and comprehending T&Cs.

Usually not worth the trouble for anything other than vanilla roundtrips. I usually just thank them, hang up and dial again until I get a US-based agent.

I once tried to explain a 9-segment MR to a young lady in India only to be quoted a simple 2-segment roundtrip over and over.

Saving money makes sense but you have to actually be able to book your flight in order for UA to count the revenue ...
