You can usually write to another carrier and ask for a comp based on your NW Plat status. Therefore, by making Plat, it allows one to use their Plat status to get an equivalent Plat status on another airline.

Another reason is that some people travel more than enough to make the highest status on more than one airline. Once someone hits the 75k mark, it forces them to reconsider whether it's worth giving NW more buisness or earning Plat on another carrier.

Third, requalifying for Plat leaves a recourse, that should the transition to a new airline not work out, you'll have Plat till Feb 2007.
