I'm not an expert on longhaul, but I do know that connecting flights on KL metal within Europe won't give you business class service, just "Europe Select" which is economy+newspaper.
Last time I did a Europe Select flight (begining of May) it was also the only way to get booze on a KLM European flight.

It isn't worth paying for the service on BA unless you either i) are on a tight enough schedule to
need whatever food they give out or ii) need the tier points (especially if you're flying out of MAN and only have City Express).
