Do I have to cough up and call BA (and would it be UK or Italy I need to call)? Thanks.
You can't do this through BA.com
You need to use a different booking engine (I use expedia). Once you've found the fare you want and checked availability, if you punch the route into Expedia it will price accordingly - it understands, eg, that a stopover at LHR of less than 24 hours is not chargeable, so if you fly in one evening and out the following morning, it will not add a stopover charge.
I found that ex-ATH offered the best price to the USA but you'll need to play around a bit to locate the best fare depending on your destination.
