This accident was another case of a pilot trying to do something that he should not have been doing. Too low, too slow and inputting commands to the aircraft in order to 'put on a good show'.

The A320 airplane is credited with saving the lives of those onboard in this instance, because the airplane would not allow the pilot to complete commands that would have caused the airplane to stall, crash and kill everyone onboard. Instead the airplane did a controlled descent albeit off the runway.
