Of course, when it comes to bumps, just about anything goes (mostly dependent on the mood/desparation level of the GA), so the above "rules" may or may not apply.
I would, upon volunteering, consider making the condition that I receive the same compensation that other chosen volunteers get. This is reasonable considering I can always withdraw my volunteering. Passing me over may satisfy the agent's mood but will not help his desperation level.
Another quesiton, what if someone involuntarily bumped wants his luggage back? Would the airline find some way to bump someone else instead?
