I'm going to Bermuda, on the upgrade list but can't check in early on line. So, my chances of an upgrade are pretty low on the LAX- JFK portion.

I'm confused. Since when does on-line check-in increase your chances for an upgrade? I was under the impression that the system keeps "retrying" to clear your sticker upgrade until 3 hours before flight time, whether or not you are checked in online. If it can't clear the upgrade, then you have to get on the airport upgrade waitlist, which doesn't even start until 2 hours before flight time, and doesn't even begin to clear until 10-15 minutes before departure.
What am I missing?
