Mabe I'm remembering incorrectly, but when I flew LAX-YVR in January, I checked in at the kiosk, which required that I swipe my passport the same way you see the agents do, but I have no recollection of having to show my passport to anybody prior to boarding.

To be honest, so long as the name on the passport that is swiped matches the name on the reservation, I'm not sure why an airline would need to do a visual check, too, other than out of an abundance of caution.
