I assume if a pax arrives at destination W/O passport/visa it is carrier dime to fly him back?
By my experiences:
UA - manually enter passport info. Effectively, you can travel without any UA agent seeing your passport (if not checking bags). No docs checked at departure gate.
NW - slide passport through kiosk each checkin. Docs checked at departure gate. OLCI also permitted for intl.
CO - slide passport through kiosk ONE TIME - system remembers your info for all future travel. Docs checked at departure gate.
AS - slide passport through kiosk each checkin - Docs checked at least one point (i.e. bag check or if no bags at departure gate) and BP stamped with "DOCS OK".
KL - slide pasport through kiosk - Docs checked at departure gate.
AA - not permitted
US/DL - no experience
