Vaguely related, but SQ certainly used to have a wider seat in the middle in C Class. The 747's were 2-3-2 and that middle seat was just an inch or so wider. It certainly seems the best solution - just shave 1/4 inch off the other seats and you get an extar 2 inches in the middle...
I was on an NH 777 (3-3-3) about a year ago, and the middle seat in the center section was definitely at least an inch wider than either of the aisle. seats. he extra width made a big difference and really reduced the claustrophobic elbowed-from-both-sides feeling.
