I would choose the Portswood. Both hotels are on the same road in the Waterfront but from what I remember the Portswood might be more suitable for kids. It's 4* compared to 5* at the Commodore and that might make it more enjoyable for the kids, unless of course they expect 5*
Don't expect to spend days at the pool, 'cause it can be quite chilly at theat time of year. And rainy....
