In a situation like this, the pilots are quite busy manuevering the plane and communicating with ATC. Makes it a bit difficult to inform the passengers immediately about what is occurring. In the few "go-arounds" I've been involved in, the passengers were not informed until after the plane had regained some altitutde and travelled some distance away from the airport. It's fairly frequent and I've not ever seen passengers "scared to death" while this is happening.
