I have had this problem a few times, and you are not allowed to check in online without a seat. Definitely keep trying, but I have noticed that if the flight is within 24 hours, the "airport takes control of the flight" (or so the platinum desk tells me), and the only way to check in at this point is at the airport. I have only noticed this occasionally, but it can happen.
